The nutrition counseling program is designed to support HMSA members by empowering them to make
better dietary choices for healthier living. The focus of the program is to direct members to
achieve healthier outcomes based on their specific and individual nourishment needs.
The nutrition health coach is a registered dietician and can assist the participant in evaluating
his or her current eating habits in relation to standard and current nutritional guidelines.
Together they will identify areas where change is needed and establish an action plan aimed at
helping the individual make and maintain dietary changes for a healthier lifestyle.
The goal is to help the member make positive behavior changes through dietary education,
motivation and reinforcement of healthy nutritional choices.
Nutrition counseling is an ongoing process that can take several follow-up sessions.
The participant and the registered dietician analyze and review food records together
and look to adjust behaviors that are especially difficult to change. Follow-up counseling
also provides the opportunity to reevaluate strategies and outcomes in a combined effort
to achieve the participant's optimal health and well being.
